The School Liaison Officer (SLO) is the primary point of contact between the military installation, the local school administration, parents, and the community at large. These education professionals are located on all Air Force installations and serve as "liaison" between Air Force families and schools.

The School Liaison Officer's role is to act as a community facilitator: connecting schools, families, and community to address educational issues impacting military children.
Parents, school personnel, and community members with questions on school-age military child education are encouraged to contact the local School Liaison Office.

School bus transportation is provided to and from school for most off-base housing areas.
Transportation must be arranged after you secure your housing.

LEHS is one of many schools worldwide, which make up the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).  The mission of DoDEA is to provide a quality education from Kindergarten through grade 12 for eligible minor dependents of Department of Defense military and civilian personnel on overseas assignments.

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) policy neither encourages nor discourages home schooling, but they do recognize that home schooling is a sponsor's right and that it can be a legitimate alternative form of education.

DoDEA schools provide services for sponsors choosing to home school their minor dependents.  Specified auxiliary services; such as, music, sports, extracurricular and inter-scholastic activities are available.

An integral part of how we provide our children the best educational program possible is through aggressive, enthusiastic volunteer programs.  It takes a combined community effort.  We need military, civilians, and parents to ensure the success of our children. 

Here at Lajes we have a history of providing outstanding support to our school and students.  There are many volunteer programs currently in place.  We have successfully developed, promoted, and maintained partnerships and communications between LEHS and the 65th Air Base Wing to provide an exemplary education and experience for our students.  Don't hesitate to contact your SLO for volunteer opportunities.

The Free and Reduced Lunch Program is coordinated by the School Liaison Office.  To apply for the program, you need to complete an USAFE Form 400 and provide it via e-mail or hardcopy to the SLO along with a current Leave and Earnings Statement.  If you qualify, your status will remain for the entire school year.  However, you will be required to register for the program at the beginning of every year.

There's no better way to enrich your school community than by volunteering to share your special talents, skills, and knowledge with students, teachers and staff.  At Lajes, our volunteers are partners in teaching, supporting and preparing our students to be productive members of our community.

Military members are encouraged to take time off from duty and civilians to be granted liberal leave (both mission permitting) to participate in school mentoring/tutoring programs, school activities, volunteer opportunities, and alternative dependent education programs.

The benefit in cultivating a strong partnership with our local school is something we all share.  Make a difference in someone's life.
