BASE LIBRARY

 

 

The Lajes Base Library provides a rich array of materials--stories, ideas, information & news--that will keep our community informed, enriched and entertained. 

Visit us in person or go to USAFE Libraries online at http://www.usafelibraries.org/, for USAFE wide library programs and information. You can also get news and info about our Lajes Library. Click on "Your Local Library" from choices available, select "Lajes" from the drop down menu. USAFE Libraries have some really fun and informative services.

Local Programs

Mango Languages System
L
eaning a language can be fun if it's easy. Mango is designed to teach users simple, practical, and polite conversation skills in a foreign language. No training, downloads or installation required. Users only need an internet connection and a USAFE library card.  

Summer Reading Program Program 
Wednesday at 1 p.m., June 22 – Aug 10 for 6 - 11 yr olds.

Look for Teen Reading Program event dates in the Accents. 
Reading logs will be given out at registration or children can register at http://usaf.evanced.info/lajes/sr/homepage.asp
Prizes will be awarded when reading milestones are met.  Sign-ups begin June 1.

Children's Story Time
Is offered every Thursday at 3 p.m. Children 5 and under enjoy listening to stories and making crafts.

Copy Machine
The only public-use copier on base is located at the Base Library, cost is 10 cents per page.

Collection and Services
Books: The Lajes Base Library has over 20,000 books in its collection. This includes adult fiction and nonfiction as well as juvenile fiction and nonfiction books. Bestsellers are available through the McNaughton lease book collection. Reference books are available for in-library use. Special collections include the CSAF books, book club books, and the Portuguese section for books on Portugal and the Azores. CLEP study guides and videos, and DANTES study materials are available for checkout.

Periodicals
The library has a variety of magazines and newspapers. Back issues may be checked out.

Audiovisual Materials
The library has a collection of over 3900 videos, over 400 music CDs, and fiction and nonfiction books on CD.  New release DVD titles are added to collection each week.

Online Databases
Online databases are available with access to academic journals for abstracts and full-text articles. Students will find information needed for research papers, professional military education, health and wellness, practice tests, and many other topics on the online research databases at the library.

Customer-use Computers
The library has 10 customer-use computers with Internet access and printing capability. There is a .10 cents per page charge. Computer usage is limited to one hour if other customers are waiting.

Children’s Computers
The library also has two computers without Internet access for children under 10 years old  These computers have the latest in children’s educational software.

Paperback Swap
A free paperback exchange is available in the library. This is a great way to recycle old paperbacks.

Interlibrary Loans
The Lajes Library provides an interlibrary loan service to obtain books not available locally but which are needed for education or research purposes.

Quiet Study Room
The Quiet Room for studying and research contains six Internet computers.
