Step 2: Fax or e mail us current vaccination records for your animal. This must be done before you arrive. It also serves to confirm your reservation.
Step 3 : A refundable $25 deposit is required. If drop off is after business hours the deposit will not be refunded. You can give us your credit card number by e-mail or phone.
Dogs: Distemper, (this includes Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Hepatitis, Adenovirus), Rabies and Bordetella (Kennel Cough).
Cats: Distemper (this includes Rhinotracheitis, Panleukopenia, Calicivirus and Chlamydophilia), Feline Leukemia and Rabies.
Bordetella (Kennel Cough) must be administered at least one week (7 days) prior to boarding, allowing the shot to take effect in the immune system. It is not necessary to wait until 7 days prior to boarding at the kennel to have your dog vaccinated for Bordetella. If a dog has had the Bordetella vaccine in its system for LESS THAN 7 days, the owner will be required to sign a waiver releasing the kennel of responsibility in the event the dog contracts Bordetella while staying in the kennel.
PLEASE NOTE. The Corona virus vaccine is not required for boarding a dog in the kennel. It is recommended for any dog living on the island, however, due to the large number of stray dogs on the island. This virus can be contracted through contact with the feces of an infected dog.
Important information
Atlantic Island Kennels reserves the right to deny boarding services to any pet not having proof of required vaccinations
You must send medical records prior to your arrival
If you hand carry the records, it is at your own risk. Staff cannot guarantee a reservation, and will not make special arrangements for you to drop off your pet after hours
If you do not make prior arrangements, it is your responsibility to make alternate arrangements until the kennel can accept the pet. Work with your sponsor.
TLF on base does not allow pets in the rooms, and there are no off base boarding facilities. There are also no pet-friendly hotels off base in the local community.
Our storage space in the facility is limited; we are not able to store carriers. Plan on taking your carrier to your TLF room while your pets are boarded.
Importation Requirements from US to Portugal
The vaccination requirements to import a pet into Portugal are different than the requirements to utilize the Atlantic Island Kennels.
Proof of rabies vaccination, a health certificate, and a microchip are the main importation requirements. The requirements can and do change periodically. For the most accurate information, contact the Portuguese Consulate nearest you.
The vaccines required to import a pet into Portugal are different than the vaccines required to use the kennel. The Portuguese only require a rabies vaccine to import a pet.
As of October 2004, these were the necessary importation requirements:
» Microchip (Home Again or AVID Eurochip)
» Bilingual European Union Health Certificate (in Portuguese)
This certificate must be endorsed by a USDA veterinarian, and is good for 120 days once signed, or until the rabies expires, whichever happens first. There are fees involved.
Link to official EU website for obtaining bilingual EU health certificate: http://europa.eu.int/comm/food/animal/liveanimals/pets/nocomm_third_en.htm
The certificate is available in both PDF and Word format in all 11 standard EU languages. The Word forms can be typed on the computer and will fit front and back on one page including instructions.
This site also has the regulation and is where any new changes to the requirements will be posted. The APHIS site only has the forms in PDF format. The PDF format is three pages with the third page being instructions and unless you have the full Adobe program you cannot enter the information on the computer.
» A USDA veterinarian must then endorse the health certificate. USDA Area Offices can be located at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/area_offices.htm
Endorsement costs $24.00 and the check should be made out to "USDA Veterinary Services". A copy of the rabies certificate (and rabies titer results, if required) must be mailed in with the health certificate. Allow enough time for mailing back and forth.
» Some airlines require 10 day old health certificate to carry an animal.

CHECK WITH YOUR AIRLINE

Rabies certificate should include date and type of vaccination, the name of the manufacturer and serial number of vaccine, and a statement by veterinarian with his name, profession, signature, and stamp.
» Health Certificate - DD Form 2209 issued within 10 days of the date of departure.
» Import Permit - Must be visaed by the Portuguese Consulate. Prior approval from Direccao Geral dos Servicos Pecurlarios, Lisbon, Portugal may be needed. Write or call Portuguese Embassy, Consular section, 1875 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Suite 101a, Washington, DC 20009 - Phone (202) 332-3007
» Quarantine - There are no quarantine requirements for importing a pet into Portugal.
Medications:
Any medical problems or special needs must be discussed with the kennel staff. Medications requiring administration after normal business hours will need to be administered by the owner or authorized person. If the kennel staff administers medication after normal business hours, a $2 fee will be charged for each trip to the kennel.
Unmanageable Pets:
To ensure the best care for an unmanageable pet, owners will be required to assist the staff in the day-to-day maintenance of their difficult to handle pet. Discounts will not be given if an owner takes care of their own pet. Owners must clean, exercise, feed, and water twice a day. Arrangements must be made for after hours.
Security:
Both a fire and a security system have been installed for the protection of your pets. A rear perimeter fence has been installed with barbed wire to prevent unwanted guests. During non-business hours, security cameras are recording.
Veterinary Service:
When you register, you will sign a veterinary authorization form. In the event your pet needs veterinary attention we will call you and attempt to contact the base veterinarian. The cost of the veterinary visit and transportation is your responsibility. If the kennel provides transportation to the vet, a $10 per trip fee will be charged.
Vet care is extremely limited on base, as well as on island. The Army vet visits the island every few months. Appointments are limited, and minor procedures sometimes involve a waiting list. There is no emergency vet care available on base. There are off base vet clinics who can care for your pet. We can help you contact these vets and work with you to get the care your pet needs.
Pet Grooming:
The groomer is located in the kennel building, and appointments are available . Basic grooming services such as bathing, nails, flea dips, trimming and cuts, anal glands, ear cleaning, and dematting are provided.
Prior to and during boarding, staff members check pets for evidence of fleas. If a problem exists, the pet will be dipped at the owners expense.
To maintain health and sanitation standards, animals may be groomed at the discretion of the kennel staff; owners are responsible for costs.
Kennel Reservations:
Vacationers are encouraged to contact the kennel as far in advance as possible. The kennel has limited space, and PCSers always take priority when it comes to guaranteeing kennel space. Summer months and holidays are particularly busy at the kennel.
You are welcome to visit your pet during operating hours. You may take your dog or cat out of the facility but they must be back before close of business. Special arrangements for drop off and pick up can be made for those pcsing. Paid deposit and medical records are required.
